Anheuser-Busch and recycling

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Anheuser-Busch, via an industry sponsored fake environmental website, promotes the idea that recycling of waste is not the problem of, or responsibility of, the companies that produce and distribute the disposable products.

bud garbage

Their Baldwinsville, NY facility is the 11th largest discharger of toxic waste into water in the US.

How many recycled cans would make up for that?

Now that you have it, what do you do with it?

Recycle This might have the answer. The blog appears to be new, but the concept is sound. The author seeks comments on possible uses for trash. The two trash items so far discussed are socks and pistachio shells.

What do you do with your used pistachio shells? I am ashamed to admit I’ve been throwing them out.

Woman to build house out of 747 [BBC]:

A California woman is going ahead with the construction of a house made of elements from a 747 Jumbo jet.

Francie Rehwald wanted her house to look “feminine”, have curves and be eco-friendly. Her architect’s answer was: “Let’s use a 747!”

The wing of the Boeing jet will be used for the roof, its nose as a meditation temple while its trademark “bulge” will serve as a loft.

This is excellent. House building, renovation, and demolition is one place where reuse can have a huge impact. According to my on-line pals over at Build it Green, building materials comprise the bulk of recyclables thrown away in New York City. That’s probably true elsewhere as well.
